The Process of the Unexpected

Yama Karim
Principal
Studio Libeskind, New York City

In any creative field process is the structure to realizing an idea. Especially in the architectural profession, much time is spent in academia and the formative professional years honing your skills, gaining expertise in design and delivering the end product. Ideas are presented in finalized packages—renderings, models and photographs. But the true magic of the design happens between the clicks, cuts and concrete. It is the process. Process by nature is methodical, but what happens when the unexpected happens? One of the driving principals of the design work at Studio Libeskind is the unexpected. We believe challenges, the unforeseen, and the non-conventional are what push design forward. Yama Karim presented several case studies exploring this idea.
