Urban Implications of the World’s First Kilometer-High Tower

Mounib Hammoud CTBUH Leader
Jeddah Economic Company, Jeddah

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has embarked on an ambitious project to construct the world’s tallest building, Jeddah Tower. Surrounding the kilometer-plus building will be a new city built out of the desert on the outskirts of Jeddah. Together, Jeddah Tower and Jeddah City are designed to become a new global destination for Saudi Arabia, introducing new forms of engagement with the country through a changing economic model. Previously reliant on oil, the Kingdom is developing Jeddah as a means of reorienting their economy towards a global model based on business and tourism. The instantly iconic Jeddah Tower will be the new anchor of this changing economic model, attracting investment to the region through its status as a symbol and icon for the country. The surrounding Jeddah City will not only benefit from that investment, but also reorient design in the region towards a more sustainable and vernacular architecture.
