Future Cities: What are the Biggest Threats and Opportunities?

Ray Shick
Regional Managing Principal, Asia Pacific
Gensler, Shanghai

As vertical communities of scale, tall buildings are ecosystems driven by the same social, economic and cultural factors that create vital and vibrant communities on the ground. This talk will explore how these factors are evolving, as well as the new calculus of community success: “live, work and play.” Tall buildings can play a vital role in global efforts to harness urbanization to empower and sustain communities, and the live, work and play model should be a central part of this broader mission.

Highlighting key findings from Gensler’s 2016 Workplace Survey, we will talk about the revolution in the workplace and what this means for building design in the future. In addition, we will explore the emerging differences between the workplace in Asia, Europe, Latin America and the U.S. Furthermore, we will talk about residential design, mixed-use and retail transformation along with how technology, urbanization and globalization are re-defining community.
