Each tall building has its own uniqueness not just in height but also its form and character. The top of a tall building is one of the important elements which complete the last step of the building. We usually call it the “Crown”. The crown could be in any form; it could be just a very long and sharp like a flag pole or round or square shape. Crown structure is not just an open framework, its aerodynamic nature would affect not just the wind load on structures but also the acceleration at the top of buildings. This presentation presented the structural design of tower crowns and how its dynamic properties affect the behavior of tall buildings. Practical examples were used to demonstrate how the design team including architects, wind engineers and structural engineers works together to minimize the adverse effect of tower crown.
