Note: The Shenzhen off-site programs were available to delegates who remained in Shenzhen on Wednesday 19 October. Those delegates who continued on to the Guangzhou segment of the Conference were not able to attend the Shenzhen off-site programs, as the Guangzhou program took place on the same day.

Located just north of Shenzhen’s main central business district, Shum Yip Upperhills is indicative of many large developments in China that have occurred over the past decade or two – six towers and a series of low-rise buildings surround an elevated pedestrian space linking two large parks directly to the east and west of the site. The scale of the project is staggering. This is not so much a building complex as a huge piece of the city being built at once, and this was the theme of this program – how can large developments be integrated into the city as a whole? The program also embraced a tour of the complex, and several of the buildings within it.

About Shum Yip Upperhills Tower 1

Located just north of Shenzhen’s main central business district, Shum Yip Upperhills Tower 1 is the tallest building within a large complex of six towers and a series of low-rise buildings surrounding an elevated pedestrian space linking two large parks directly to the east and west. Shum Yip Upperhills Tower 1 was from the onset designed as a pair of towers, drawing inspiration through the power of having two buildings rather than one in order to reinforce the landmark status of the highly visible project.

Designed as a columnless building with an entirely flexible interior, Shum Yip Upperhills Tower 1 was framed as a composite structure with a reinforced concrete core and two very large steel super columns on each edge of the tower with steel floorplates strung between them. This… Read More
