The CTBUH holds an annual student tall building design competition, which attracts hundreds of entries from universities around the world. In 2016, the competition was linked into the Shenzhen / Guangzhou / Hong Kong Conference, with the best projects displayed and the final judging occurring at the conference itself. Gold + Student Research Project

The CTBUH annual student research competition requires students, preferably working in groups under the direction of an academic professor, to focus on a relevant research question, and create an engaging “output” as a response. $20,000 of funding was awarded to a single student group, to be creatively used in undertaking the research and creating the output. Each year the CTBUH conducts a survey / quiz on tall buildings at its annual conference, which often leads to a piece of commissioned research afterwards.
